Maui Trip Report #1 - The Food

Our first morning was overcast, but I decided we would still go to a beach front restaurant for breakfast. I chose Sea House and suggested hubby get the Da Kitchen Sink Fried Rice recommended by many on TripAdvisor. It turned out to be just the thing he needed to snap out of his travel fatigue!

Waiting for the Sea House Restaurant to open and
happy to see the sand and water.

I chose, and thoroughly enjoyed, the Tropical Pancakes.

During our nine-night stay, we only ate six restaurant meals. Staying in a condo (Maui Sands in Napili-Honokowai), we were able to prepare simple meals with food purchased from the Times Market grocery store, farmers markets, bakeries, and local fish market. We especially liked the Times Market rotisserie chickens ($8.99). They were so big we easily got two meals out of one chicken.

From the Honokowai farmers market. . .

. . .we ate several new fruits such as apple bananas. . .
. . .and lychees.
The bananas were small, but the carrots were huge!

Another new food for us was mahi mahi. The best we had was the "grilled to perfection" and panko-crusted mahi mahi at Paia Fish Market. We liked it so much we ate at PFM twice!

(The lunch portion is two pieces; the dinner portion is four pieces.)

Again thanks to TripAdvisor recommendations, we indulged in several bakery items. The pictures below don't include the banana cream pie we got from Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop. Hubby and I agree it was one of the best desserts we've ever eaten. It took all of our will power to not stop at Leoda's every time we passed, which was often.

Lilikoi cheese cake from Stillwell's Bakery and Cafe.
Lilikoi key lime pie from Sugar Beach Bake Shop.
Donut stick from T Komoda Bakery.
(We were too late for their famous cream puffs.)

While in Makawao, home of T Komoda Bakery, we also had a delicious brunch at the Market Fresh Bistro.

We shared a large mango muffin with vanilla butter and. . .
a piece of frittata made with local sausage and vegetables.
(Yes, this is a half portion!)

I was so happy to find huli huli chicken at the Keolahou Church in Kihei. I made it at home a few weeks before our trip and really wanted to compare mine to the authentic version. I did good!

The Keolahou Church cooks and sells ribs
and huli huli chicken on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
It doesn't get more authentic than this!
We bought a rib plate and whole chicken for a beach picnic.

I was also happy to introduce hubby to Hawaiian shaved ice. He loved it and insisted Ululani's be our last stop before heading to the airport.

We had Hawaiian shaved ice three times and
hubby always stuck with his root beer and cherry.
